Trike and Side Car Training

Hello to all Trike and Sidecar riders that may be interested in Trike or Sidecar training.

Shenandoah Harley Davidson, is pleased to announce that training in driving motorcycles set up with sidecars, or that have been produced are modified as Trikes is now available through our on-site motorcycle school. The Virginia DMV recognizes the Evergreen Safety Council training program as the sole state approved training program for side-cars and Trikes in Virginia. Successful Completion of the program will entitle you to receive a Motorcycle endorsement on you Virginia State Drivers license.

If you are currently a sidecar or tike rider, or if you think you would like to see what a sidecar or trike rig is all about, come join us for a fun filled 3 days from Aug. 30 thru Sept. 1, 2010. The cost is only $125.00 dollars and includes all material required. We will even furnish the motorcycle, or you may bring your own sidecar or Trike rig. (Some restrictions apply).

The second class offering will be Oct. 1, 2, 3 of 2010.

If you wish to enroll, please fill out the enclosed reservation form and bring it in to the motorcycle training department at Shenandoah HD. You may also enroll by contacting the motorcycle training department at 540-213-8026 and tell them that you want to sign up for the side car trike class. Space is limited so call early to reserve your spot.

The following information will hopefully answer many of the questions you may have concerning these classes.

Sidecar/Trike Education Program (S/TEP)

Shenandoah HD and Evergreen Safety Council believe that 3-wheeled motorcycles are significantly different in handling dynamics and characteristics from 2-wheeled motorcycles. For this reason separate training is required for both the novice and experienced sidecarist or trike rider. For those riders who choose to enjoy the sport of motorcycling on three wheels, or who are contemplating riding on three wheels, it is our goal to have this program available to meet the need of those motorcyclists.

BASIC S/TEP course - this 16-hour course is designed to provide the rider with knowledge, confidence and 3-wheeled driving skills practiced in a safe, controlled environment. Classroom sessions present text and lecture coupled with hands-on activities. Each classroom session is followed by time spent on the riding range practicing the new skill presented in the classroom. Under the direction of skilled instructors, each student is coached through maneuvers until both student and instructor are satisfied with the progress.

ADVANCED S/TEP course – is an 8-hour class designed to help riders with three-wheeled riding experience to further develop the skills necessary to avoid accidents and ride safely. Participants must provide their own rigs for the class which will be subject to a safety inspection and proof of insurance.

Private motorcycle and sidecar/trike training lessons are available. Please call for price and availability.

Where and at what times are the classes held? Classes are held at the Shenandoah HD training facility.

CURRENT CLASS LISTING: Aug.

How long is the course?
The BASIC S/TEP class is approximately 16 hours in length, and is structured for the beginner. The Advanced S/TEP class is approximately 8 hour in length, and is structured for the more experienced rider or someone who has just completed the Basic S/TEP course. The August 30,31and Sept. 1 Class will be a combined Basic and Advanced S/TEP class.

How much are the classes?
The classes for 2010 are $125.00 for the full course which includes both the Basic and Advanced S/TEP classes.

How do I register?
You may register by mail or in person. For payment, credit card, check or cash is accepted. Payment may be made over the phone with a Credit card, or come and pay in person at Shenandoah HD. We do not complete registration of a student until payment is received. Class availability isn't guaranteed until actual time of completed registration, which is receipt of payment.

What do I need for class?
You need a helmet, either ¾ or full face that is DOT approved. (We have a limited supply of helmets on hand if you do not currently own one.) You will also need protective eyewear (eyeglasses or sunglasses are permissible), full-fingered gloves, protective clothing (covering arms and legs), and sturdy footwear that covers the ankle. Sturdy over-the-ankle boots, preferably with a small heel (i.e. work, hiking or motorcycle-specific) are required. Tennis shoes or shoes made with cloth or canvas are not acceptable. You should dress for the weather and be prepared for inclement conditions.

Do we furnish the rigs?
We will normally have at least one Trike and sidecar available for class use, so it is strongly recommended that you bring your own sidecar or trike rig with you to class. If you are not able to bring your sidecar or trike, please let us know what type rig you own or plan on acquiring when you register.

If you bring your own sidecar rig, you must have at least 50 pounds of removable ballast in the sidecar for the first day's riding exercises. (A sandbag, available at your local hardware store, is a good option.) a fellow student may be used to assist you in achieving the desired ballast level. You must also provide proof of liability insurance.

What does the class get me?
Upon successful completion of the S/TEP course, you will receive an Evergreen Safety Council Course Completion Card. This card may be of use in obtaining better insurance rates. If you do not currently have a motorcycle endorsement, you will also be given a DMV Waiver certificate. This course satisfies the Virginia DMV requirements for a license endorsement for two or three wheeled motorcycles only, or motorcycle endorsement on a standard driver’s license.

Do I need a motorcycle learner's permit to take the novice class?
If you are over 19 you do not have to have a learner’s permit. If you are under 19, you must hold a learners permit for at least 9 months before a license may be issued.

What happens if I have to cancel or don't show up for class?
Refunds are not permitted unless there is a family emergency. Rescheduling is permitted for a $50.00 fee.

Can I just drop in for a class?
You may drop in for a class. If there are fewer than 6 registered students in the class, or if one of the registered students doesn't show up on time, you may (at the instructor's discretion) join the class. You will be required to pay the full tuition at that time. You must bring your own rig. If you are registered in a later class and are attempting to "drop in" on an earlier class you will be required to pay at the time of the "drop in if you have not already paid. Drop in’s only permitted on the first day of class.

Don't you have an earlier class?
We enroll students "first come first served" in the earliest open training slot. We offer this class as often as is possible considering demand, classroom/range and instructor availability.

Do I have to have an endorsement?
In order to operate either a two wheeled or three wheeled motorcycle in Virginia, you must have a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license. However, you do not need a motorcycle endorsement or learners permit to take a class.
